Last Friday, Harrington Raceway, Inc.’s Board of Directors approved a $35 million expansion project for the Raceway’s Midway Slots & Simulcast. Midway Slots & Simulcast, located on US Route 13 on the Delaware State Fairgrounds in Harrington, first opened its doors in August 1996 and has expanded its facility twice since opening.
“Satisfying our loyal customers and attracting new customers with a first-class gaming experience at a destination landmark is the reason for the latest expansion,” said Patricia B. Key, chief financial officer at Harrington Raceway.
The project, which is the largest undertaking by Harrington Raceway to date, includes plans for a 60,000 sq. ft. addition, extensive renovations, and a remodel of the entire facility for a total project of approximately 130,000 gross sq. ft. “Our customers asked us for a more spacious gaming floor and more choices with regard to restaurants and entertainment, and we’re delivering,” stated Key. According to Key, under the new project, Midway Slots’ gaming floor will almost double in size where guests will find a full complement of 2,000 of their favorite games spaced apart comfortably yet within close proximity to Midway Slots’ ever popular “International Buffet”. Other features outlined in the project include a new steak house with optional terrace dining; a new lounge; a redesigned coffee shop with a ”Grab-n-Go deli”; and a new conference/entertainment center. Key noted that customers also voiced a need for more and better parking. Key commented that the number of parking spaces, under the new plan, will be greatly increased with a greater percentage being located within close proximity of the various entrances. Key offered there would also be a larger customer drop-off/valet area as part of the project design.
All of this adds up to a major undertaking by Harrington Raceway to remain competitive in the gaming business while facing the prospect of the introduction of gaming in Maryland and Pennsylvania. “We want to continue to be locals’ favorite casino destination,” says R. Bruce McKee, general manager at Midway Slots. “We strive to offer comfort and top-notch customer service. Our casino is visited regularly by a loyal customer base who tells us that we offer the finest food, top-quality entertainment, and the friendliest, most courteous staff around. Under the new plan, we’ll ‘wow’ them with an unmatched experience in an expanded and completely renovated facility.”
“Midway Slots, along with Harrington Raceway and the Delaware State Fair, have clearly established the fairgrounds property in Harrington as the finest multi-faceted entertainment complex in southern Delaware and Maryland’s eastern shore,” says William J. DiMondi, president of Delaware State Fair, Inc. “With Midway Slots’ announced expansion and extreme makeover, Harrington Raceway’s live racing and simulcast, the Delaware State Fair’s Centre Ice Rink, and all of the weekend special events on the fairgrounds, we are collectively able to offer the best in entertainment and recreation for adults and children alike in our area.”
Groundbreaking for the 12 month expansion project is planned to commence June 2006. Construction is expected to take place through a series of carefully planned phases that are designed to minimize any impact on any of the fairgrounds’ customers. It is also expected that approximately 100 new jobs will be created as a result of the expansion. Architectural and engineering services are being provided by EwingCole of Philadelphia, PA and Cabe Associates of Dover, DE. Construction will be managed by LP Ciminelli of Buffalo, NY.###
