HARRINGTON, DE - July 20, 2006

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Delaware State Fair in cooperation with Delaware Solid Waste Authority (DSWA), a 2006 Fair sponsor, and with assistance from Delaware’s Department of Natural Resources (DNREC) and Americorps, will undertake recycling efforts at this year’s Fair.

In support of DSWA’s curbside recycling program in Kent County and with the kickoff of the Sussex County program, the Fair will be collecting corrugated cardboard from its concessionaires, attractions, and sponsors. DNREC is also helping to promote recycling by placing recycling containers in specific areas of the Fairgrounds to collect plastic bottle and aluminum cans. Through coordinated efforts from DNREC, a team from Americorps will service all of the containers with final materials being recycled by DSWA.

In another effort to promote curbside recycling, DSWA has collaborated with the Fair and Pepsi, another 2006 Fair sponsor. Pepsi will sponsor “Pepsi Day at the Fair” on July 29th. As a part of the day’s festivities, Pepsi has distributed specially marked cans of it’s Dr. Pepper brand promoting a “Buy One Get One Free” gate admission program when the can is presented and recycled.

DSWA will have staff on-hand at the admission gates to collect the cans. According to Thomas Houska, Chief of Administrative Services of DSWA, “We are very excited the Fair has initiated this effort. Through the cooperative efforts of DSWA, DNREC, Americorp and the State Fair, we are spreading the word that recycling can be successful in every venue." Dennis Hazzard, the Delaware State Fair General Manager, added, “We’re proud to be working with DSWA and DNREC. With agriculture being the foundation of the Delaware State Fair, we are thrilled to be involved with the recycling efforts as this will aid in the reduction of landfill use and assists in maintaining a greener Earth.” Jim Short of DNREC added, “This an excellent opportunity for us to work with the Delaware State Fair and DSWA to promote recycling at one of the state's largest events.”

The Delaware State Fair takes place Thursday, July 20th through Saturday, July 29th in Harrington, Delaware. DSWA will have a booth at the Fair where fairgoers can learn more about their curbside recycling programs throughout Delaware.
