DELAWARE STATE FAIR ANNOUNCES RECIPIENTS OF TOP HONORS

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Each year, the Delaware State Fair receives entries from exhibitors hoping to grab top honors and receive ribbons and/or cash prizes for their talents. This year, participants entered in categories such as photography, flower arranging, needlework, canning vegetables, etc. Each exhibitor submitted the results of his/her hard work to the Fair to be evaluated by certified judges and to be displayed for all fairgoers to see during the event which ran from July 20 through July 29.

The following participants were awarded Judges’ Awards in Artistic Design: Sydney Riggi for Adult Artistic Design, Benjamin Brown for Intermediate Artistic Design, Halie Murray Davis for Junior Artistic Design, and Rebecca Gicker for Silk Artistic Design. Receiving Judges’ Awards in the Flower Department were Barbara Melvin for Cut Flower Arrangements, Debbie Mitchell for Adult and Intermediate Cut Flower Arrangements, Peggy Strain for Adult and Intermediate Horticulture, and Jeffery Sullivan for Junior Horticulture. Receiving Specialty Awards were Frank Wolenter, the Rosanne Messick Award; Karen Williams, the Green Thumb Award; and Bethany Killmon, the Busy Bee Award.

In the Needlework Department, Judges’ Awards were given to Norma Hayan for Afghans, Mary Yoder for Crotched Articles, Teresa Fox for Embroidery and Other Needlework, Patricia Scott for Home Sewing, Dorothy Overmiller for Knitted and Woven Articles, Ruth Warren for Quilts, and Rebecca Cridler for Rugs. A Specialty Award was given to Monimia Barker for work done by an exhibitor 70 years or older.

In the Garden and Vegetable Department, a Superintendent’s Award was given to Clair Jewell.

In the Culinary Arts Department, Judges’ Awards were given to Ive Gravenor for Jellies, Susan Newark for Herbal Vinegar and Oils, Linda Brown for Red Cherries, Canned Peas, Pickles and Preserves, and Alan Gravenor for Gift Baskets. Other Judges’ Awards were given to Amy Huff for Bread and Candy, Judy Walls for Machine Made Bread, Amy Welsh for Cakes, Tyler Saccardi for Cookies, and Katherine Paul and Sandra Evans for Pies.

In the Arts and Crafts Department, Judges’ Awards were given to Barbara Hurley for Basket Weaving, Amy Huff for Color Photography, Floyd Pritchett for Best of Show and Best of Class, Donna Conrad for Best Wreath, and Gayle Sprau for a Painted Gourd.

In the Poultry Department, William Sandoe won the title of Reserve Champion Bantam in the Senior Division. The title of Grand Champion Meat and Layer in the Senior Division went to Eugene White.
