Junior Livestock Auction
JUNIOR LIVESTOCK AUCTION
BRUCE BETTS
THURSDAY, JULY 30, 2009
6:30 P.M. – KENT BUILDING
- Exhibitors of Grand Champion and Reserve Grand Champion Market Lambs, Market Steers, Market Swine and Market Goats are strongly encouraged to sell their animals in the Delaware State Fair “Junior Livestock Auction”. The Auction will sell approximately 100 lots.
- The Competitive Exhibits Committee will decide the target number of animals per class before the show occurs. This will allow the exhibitor to know before the show which number of placed animals will go to auction. Unlike the past, animals from each class will be invited to the Auction. Each exhibitor is limited to entering up to two (2) animals per species, with no more than three (3) animals total per exhibitor.
- Buyers must be assured they are receiving top quality, “market-ready” animals. All qualifying animals will be paint branded immediately following the placing of each class. Hogs may not weigh less than 220 lbs. or more than 275 lbs. to be eligible for sale. Sheep may not weigh less than 80 lbs. or more than 150 lbs. to be eligible for sale. Steers may not weigh less than 1,000 lbs. or more than 1,400 lbs. to be eligible for sale. We will sell up to 50% of the steers that meet all the criteria. Goats may not weigh less than 45 lbs. or more than 120 lbs. to be eligible for sale.
- All animals going through the sale must be permanently identified by tattoo or other permanent identification and be recorded by a representative of the Jr. Livestock Auction Committee. For additional information refer to Livestock Tagging Program on our website.
- After the animals are sold, the exhibitor is expected to care for and feed the animal throughout the duration of the Fair.
- It is each seller’s responsibility to complete a sale consignment form available from their respective Superintendent at weigh-in. Each exhibitor or their parent must be at weigh-in or their animal may not be eligible for sale.
- To obtain maximum income from this sale, it is strongly recommended that each person selling an animal contact a minimum of at least three potential buyers who will come to the Fair and bid on their animals.
- All youth selling an animal(s) MUST BE PRESENT at the auction unless there is a verifiable emergency confirmed in advance by their Superintendent. All sellers must also be in proper “show dress”.
- The Junior Livestock Auction adheres to the Code of Ethics as noted. The Fair’s Competitive Livestock Committee will manage the Auction through its Livestock Auction Sub-Committee. The Exhibitor’s Code of Ethics shall apply as appropriate.
- Each seller is encouraged to write a thank you note to each buyer within seven days of the Auction.
- Anyone wishing to purchase animals that were donated back to 4-H or FFA at the Livestock Auction should contact Kristin Cook at (302) 730-4000 or Karen Hutchinson at (302) 857-3327.
