Becky Clendaniel - Milford, DE
All-Star Youth Day: Wednesday, July 25, 2001
Becky, 11, is this year's winner of the state spelling bee. She finished 35th out of 248 contestants in the National Spelling Bee. Becky was also recently named winner of an essay contest sponsored by the Delaware Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and will advance to national competition. Becky attends Milford Middle School.
Megan Collins - Dover, DE
All-Star Youth Day: - Monday, July 23, 2001
Megan, 16, was a kicker with Caesar Rodney High School's football team last fall. Her two extra-point kicks in a tight game against Lake Forest resulted in a victory for Caesar Rodney. Her accurate kicking has earned her the nickname "Automatic". She is the daughter of Kathleen Collins.
Allison Elfreth - Milford, DE
All-Star Youth Day: - Friday, July 27, 2001
Allison's, 17, volunteer development of reading corners for pre-school children attending the Milford's Head Start program earned her the Prudential Spirit of Community Service Award. She has committed hundreds of hours to helping pre-school children learn to read. Considered a model student, Allison also reads to seniors in a nursing home. She is the daughter of Sarah and Arthur Elfreth.
Katie Gedney - Camden, DE
All-Star Youth Day: Thursday, July 19, 2001
Although Katie, 20, suffers from Spina Bifida, she has shown livestock at the Delaware State Fair for six years. During the 2001 Fair, she showed dairy cows, a pig, a meat goat, two chickens and three rabbits. She has also shown in Kentucky, Pennsylvania and Maryland. Katie is enrolled in the University of Delaware Parallel Program. Her parents are Thomas and Lawana Gedney.
Caitlin McGee - Seaford, DE
All-Star Youth Day: Friday, July 20, 2001
Caitlin, 11, is the winner of a Land's End Hero Award for reading to children at the Seaford Public Library. She donated all of her $5,000 cash award to her three favorite charities. Nancy McGee is the mother of this ambitious student.
Howard "Howie" Pleasanton III - Marydel, DE
All-Star Youth Day: Sunday, July 22, 2001
In spite of having Cerebral Palsy, Howie, 6, showed horses at this year's Fair. His older sister, who assists him when he shows, motivates his passion for horses. Howie is entering first grade at W. Reilly Brown School this September. His parents are Faye and Howard Pleasanton.
Quincy Raymond - Wilmington, DE
All-Star Youth Day: Saturday, July 21, 2001
Quincy, 17, combined schoolwork and a job while helping to build his family's new home through Habitat for Humanity. Quincy also helps his mom with the household bills, sings in the church choir, plans to study computer science in college and would like to someday land a record contract. Quincy's proud mother is Lisa Bowers.
Chad Robinson - Greenwood, DE
All-Star Youth Day: Thursday, July 26, 2001
Talking politics with Chad, 17, is a surefire way to pump his adrenaline. His interest in politics earned him the distinction of being named one of two Delaware delegates to the U.S. Senate Youth Program in Washington, where he spent a week meeting cabinet members, Defense Department representatives and others who run the country. Chad was also elected to Boy's State. He plans to major in Political Science in college. His parents are Mannon and Hazel Robinson.
Matt Smith - Milford, DE
All-Star Youth Day: Tuesday, July 24, 2001
Diagnosed with Hodgkin's Disease in 1999, Matt, 18, overcame the obstacles of this serious illness and its sometimes painful treatment to finish in the Top 20 in the state golf tournament last year. As a senior at Milford High School, Matt returned to playing soccer and scored nine goals. He was this year's recipient of the Fran Lore Scholarship plaque awarded by the Lower Delaware Gridiron Club.
Jude Tibeau - Seaford, DE
All-Star Youth Day: Saturday, July 28, 2001
Jude, 13, is one of two Delaware students to receive the Prudential Spirit of Community Award for volunteer work. He volunteered to read books to pre-school children last summer when he discovered the program had been canceled due to lack of a helper. His mother is Iloria Alicus.
